Today, I explored with a 10th grade class the concept of imaginary and complex numbers, and how to solve quadratic equations that have no real number solutions. We also briefly explored fractals and had our minds blown by checking out a YouTube animation of "zooming in on" a Mandelbrot Set. We ended the class with students singing the Quadratic Formula song to the tune of "Pop Goes the Weasel", watching the "Rolling in the Deep" (by Adele) YouTube version of a Quadratic Formula song (created by and sung by two U.S. teachers), and having the students "enter" a contest I created for them: solving a very challenging complex number problem I gave them. They have until the end of the day on Thursday to find me around campus and turn in their solution to me. The winner gets to choose a candy bar of her/his choice that I will purchase for and give to her/him on Friday!
